Jim Fan says his CoRL reveal is real, autonomous, no speedup

Yuke Zhu confirms the keynote is a sneak peek of NVIDIA GEAR work, though no task or metric has been named.

Jim Fan is running a countdown to a CoRL keynote at the Hilton Austin on Monday November 9 at 1:45pm. His post promises "Something extraordinary" and nothing else. Two days out, that was the whole pitch.

Then Lourd Arun Raj asked the question everybody asks about a robotics teaser. Sim or real hardware. Fan's reply was four words long. "Real. Autonomous, no speedup".

That is three separate claims, and each one is the thing that usually collapses when a demo video gets picked apart. Real hardware rather than a simulator. Autonomous rather than teleoperated, meaning no human driving it remotely. And played at normal speed rather than the 2x or 4x that quietly turns a slow policy into a snappy one.

What we actually know

Yuke Zhu, who works on NVIDIA GEAR, pointed at the same talk and called it a sneak peek of what the team has been cooking. So the work is GEAR's, and it is being saved for the stage rather than dropped as a video first.

What has not been said is everything else. No capability. No task. No robot platform. No success rate, no number of trials, no training recipe. Nobody outside the team knows yet whether this is a manipulation result, a locomotion result, a new model, or something that does not fit those buckets.

Why the pre-commitment matters

The usual order of events is that a lab posts footage, the field spends a day arguing over whether it was teleoperated or sped up, and the lab clarifies later or not at all. Fan has flipped that. He has put real, autonomous and unsped-up on the record before anyone has seen a single frame.

That is a claim with a deadline attached. On Monday afternoon in Austin the room gets to check it, and so does everyone who watches the clips afterwards. If the footage shows cuts, a visible operator, or a timestamp that does not match the motion, the receipt is already posted.

Until then, this is a tease with one useful line in it. The capability is still unknown.

Sim or real hardware? I really hope it's real robots this time.
