Physical Intelligence opens the Pi API in beta

Outside teams can now ask for access to fine-tune the company's robot foundation models on their own hardware.

Physical Intelligence announced the beta release of the Pi API, the company's route for outside teams to adapt its robot models to their own machines. The post says it has partnered with companies across diverse industries already, with examples running from harvesting strawberries to assembling servers. Access is now opening to more teams.

Chelsea Finn, who posted the same news, says many people have already been using the API to fine-tune the Pi models for their robots, and that the team is hoping to expand testing significantly. She pointed at a blog post and a signup form and asked interested people to get in touch. That is the shape of the launch. It is a waitlist with a portfolio of early users attached, not a general availability moment.

What was actually shown

The company named two applications, strawberries and servers. It did not name a single partner company, did not give success rates, did not say how many robots are running the models, and did not say how much data a team needs to bring to make a fine-tune work. So the impressive part here is the range of robot bodies implied by that list, not a deployment number. Treat the breadth as a partner list for now.

The interesting bit for anyone building is the premise. One pretrained model, fine-tuned onto arms and grippers that look nothing like each other, doing jobs that look nothing like each other. That is the whole bet behind robot foundation models, and an API is the cheapest way to find out whether it holds up on hardware the lab never touched. Until outside teams publish their own numbers, the only evidence is the company's own framing.

The reaction

Lerrel Pinto called it exciting to see so many different types of robots using the same intelligence layer, and credited the Pi team for making the models easy for the community to build on. That is the view from an academic lab, not a customer with a line rate to hit.

What to watch next is simple. If the Pi API is real leverage, third parties start posting their own fine-tuned policies on their own robots within weeks, with their own failure footage. If the only demos keep coming from Physical Intelligence, the beta is still a beta.
