Tutor raises $75M and targets 1,000 robots by 2027
Josh Gruenstein says the company is in almost four times as many sites as a year ago, with robots directed by human tutors.
Tutor raised a $75M Series B led by a16z, with participation from USV and Neo. Co-founder Josh Gruenstein announced the round and said the company is on track for more than 1,000 robots under contract by the end of 2027.
we’re on track to have more than 1,000 robots under contract by the end of 2027
nearly a third of this year’s deployments went to existing customers coming back for more
The traction numbers are the part worth reading twice. Gruenstein says Tutor is in almost 4x as many sites as a year ago, and nearly a third of this year's deployments went to existing customers coming back for more. Repeat business is a harder signal to fake than a pilot count, because a customer who did not get value does not order a second time.
Humans are in the loop by design
Tutor's robots work real jobs across the United States, and Gruenstein is explicit that they are directed by human "tutors" plus foundation models the company has trained on the work being done. So these are not autonomy numbers. A robot under contract is a job being done with a person in the loop, and the human direction is also the data source that feeds the next model. The new money goes to frontier model training, robot manufacturing and deployment into industry.
What the sources do not say is how many robots are under contract today, which industries they work in, or how much of a given task runs without human direction. The 1,000 figure is a 2027 target stated by the company, not a shipped number.
Figure's F.03 rolls out of BotQ
Separately, Brett Adcock posted video of newly manufactured F.03 robots leaving BotQ, Figure's factory, and heading across campus. That is the same robot that walked 13 straight days on a treadmill last month, now coming off the line in batches. Adcock gave no production rate and no destination for the units in the clip, so treat it as a manufacturing update rather than a deployment one.
